Maria Carvalho

Meet Maria Carvalho, a lifelong Connecticut resident. Maria is a published author and poet.

"Writing stories and poetry came naturally to me as a child, but I got away from it as an adult, focusing on motherhood and my career for a number of years. Then, about 15 years ago, I read "The Brightest Star in the Sky" by Mirian Keyes and something just clicked; I knew I had to start writing again. I've been happily writing ever since!"

Maria is the proud author of the children's book, 'Hamster in Space'. Kirkus Reviews praised the story for its sharp understanding of kids' wacky sense of humor.

She has published many short stories and poetry. "I've been fortunate to have had many stories and poems published in a wide array of anthologies and magazines. 'Droids & Dragons' will be around the 50th publication that my work appears in."

When we asked Maria what her inspiration was for her Droids & Dragons short story, 'Second Son', she said it was the theme. "My inspiration for it was the android theme—it got me thinking about this question: what lengths would a grieving person go to in order to hold onto their lost loved one?"

Maria's favorite line from 'Second Son' is,

"But the boy in the bed has been five for years; technology still has its limits."  

Everyone has favorite authors. With Maria, "Two of my favorite authors are Alice Hoffman and Matt Haig, both of whom have wonderful magical realism styles that I adore."

Fun facts about Maria: "I am the writer in residence for Literary Revelations Publishing House, and a 2025 Pushcart Prize nominee. In addition to writing, I love the outdoors and photography. I'm also a compulsive pun maker."
