Pub 518 welcomes author and poet, Mir Rainbird to the Droids & Dragons team.

"Hi! This is Mir Rainbird, author of 'Monster’s Child'. I’ve been writing my entire life. In fact, I started writing before I could read, so my first “stories” are strings of letters that only look like words. I think one of them was a Poky Little Puppy fanfic…

My mother was a big reader and used to read me the books she was reading when I was quite small. I think I was three when she read me The Hobbit, probably my first book with a dragon in it."

Mir is a published author with quite a few poems and stories out there. Her newest piece is in the Arthurian issues of Old Moon Quarterly. "I have stories in several anthologies, such as Poisoned Soup, Howl, Alternative Holidays, and Atlas of the Deep Ones. Some places where you read me online for free are Trollbreath, Inner Worlds, Anomaly, Alphanumeric, and Eye to the Telescope. You can also listen to people read my stories aloud at A Midnight Kind of Place and Tales to Terrify.  https://linktr.ee/rainbirdm"

We asked Mir which author influenced her writing, and she said, "It’s hard to say which author influenced my storytelling style the most because I read voraciously as a child, but I’m going to go with Roger Zelazny and Emma Bull. I encountered them around the same time, age ten, when I had exhausted the children’s section at my local library and was searching for adult books that felt magical (as opposed to just having magic in them). They were novel to me as fantasy with settings and language that felt contemporary.

But for this specific piece of writing the big influence is probably Patricia McKillip."

Mir Rainbirds flash fiction, 'Monster Child' is featured in the 2026 anthology, Droids & Dragons. Here is a standout snippet.

“It might mean something, to have a quest instead of a journey.”

Mir couldn't name a most-liked book, but she has favorite dragon characters. "I can’t pick a favorite book, but here are some favorites with dragon characters: Dealing with Dragons, His Majesty’s Dragon, The Forgotten Beasts of Eld, Dragonsbane."

Writers have superpowers and many writers have the same one as Mir. "My writing superpower is that I can always start writing. Finishing, not so much..."

Consider checking out Mir on her Instagram and tell her your favorite dragon!

Droids & Dragons is now available on Amazon and other platforms.
