Here's the full question, as it was too long for the title here: "Is it a good idea to structure a novel similar to a TV series, a string of short stories with common characters and an overarching plot? What are pitfalls you must be avare of, if you write that way?"
It’s a find idea to do it this way. There are plenty of anthologies of short stories written by the same author, and some certainly use the same characters. The biggest pitfall in this would be marketing it to the wrong people. If you advertise such a book as a traditional fiction novel then readers will be disappointed. If advertised as an anthology then you’ll get people who like short stories, which is the focus of this kind of book, and thus they’re much more likely to enjoy it and leave a favorable review.
